Exacompta Clairefontaine

A pioneering trademark in quality stationery products, writing and office paper.
The Clairefontaine stationery group has been making paper since 1858 and stationery products since 1890.
In 1928, Charles Nusse, great grandson of Clairefontaine’s founder, Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger, set up a workshop in Paris for mass producing accounting ledgers, recognisable by the quality paper used and their flawless design. Charles Nusse and Exacompta established in this way the group’s policy to have trademarks of good quality.
Nusse took over Clairefontaine in 1950 and immediately launched a line of exercise books for schoolchildren. These stood out from the second-rate products of the time on account of the quality paper and snazzy coloured, hard-wearing covers.

The quality philosophy is also applied to Exacompta diaries, envelopes, notepads and all kinds of paper.
In 1964, Clairefontaine finalised production of paper for photocopiers. Thanks to the breakthroughs they made, Clairefontaine could lead the way in top range products in this field, becoming the market’s best known trademark (Emge study/cut-size Market Performance of mills brands / Europe February 2000).
Products of companies acquired in recent decades have been refined, trademarks given new life, becoming part of the business supply.
