Each manufacturer has his own recipe but basically the leads are all made using similar ingredients: a blend of coloured pigments, mineral opacifying and texture fillers, gum or resin as a blinder.
The difference between leads depends on the proportion and the quality of ingredients they contain.
Because of this crayons range from dry to soft, waxy and watercolours.
Their potential to cover the paper also varies and the opacity of the shade must be taken into consideration if coloured paper is to be used.
All grain papers. A very light grain is used for precise drawing with hard leads while more textured paper is usual for colouring with soft leads.
Except for watercolour pencils, the strength of the paper is not a determining element. The size of the work is the most important criteria.
