DRY TECHNIQUES

Choosing the colour

The colour of the paper (from white to black and including the whole spectrum of colours) depends on the opacity of the medium to be used.
When using transparent colours the shade of the paper will be selected according to the desired luminosity.
When using opaque colours the shade of the paper will be selected according to the desired effects: contrast, matching colours.

The choice of grain

It is important to differentiate between the techniques which require a grained surface to fix the pigment (powder, crumbly colours) and the techniques which work well on smooth surfaces, while bearing in mine the desired result: precision drawing, line drawing, rough drawing (sketch, rough)

Choosing the weight

A heavy paper (weight by m2) is usually reserved for the final work
The choice will also be made in terms of format and the rigidity of the support depending on the type of media being used (for dry pastel using a large format = thick and rigid paper)
The weight of the paper reflects the price so lighter papers are used for roughs.

Choosing the packaging

The many different paper packagings (books, pads, blocks, sheets, rolls) are chosen for ease of use whether it be for carrying around, travelling, studio work, preparatory work or for large scale works.
